Manual: Project mask
Genre: Ceramic art
Material: Ceramic

Intro
A mask eventually breaks,
a moment when the hidden
identity unveils itself.

Can you please introduce yourself?
- I am a craftsman, which explores the similar characteristics between
the hard materials like horn, angular models, gold, and pottery,
also use dirt (soil) as a base to create different animal models.

How did you start your craft’s work and tells us about the process.
- Dirt(soil) is the best material for crafts, because the material
is movable and flexible. I wanted to be a creator by using dirt to
describe different combined images of existing animals and create
a non-existing, imagined new animal.

Seems like the word “Horn” means a lot to you?
- “Horn” contains a double side meaning. Horn’s physical side of
hardness and strong appearance was a symbolic of power. However,
the beautiful shapes of lines purify the mood. At the same time,
horn projects in the middle, right in front of the body, which
can both attack and protect. The animal with his horn, which
symbolizing the artist (myself), contains the meaning of be
beautiful but at the same time be strong.

The craft’s process itself looks very interesting, could you please tell us about it?
- The most important thing in my craft’s work is everything handmade.
As I mentioned before, myself as a creator, and make those imagined
animals all by hand. This is an irreconcilable value and a clear
direction and guide for my artwork.

Ceramic contains varieties of patterns, do you prefer any working
process and please introduce to us any characteristic of those patterns.

- In order to describe animal’s detail, I use plaster-casting
technique but choose not to use enamel so that the animal’s
wrinkles and furs can be described more clearly. For this
project, I use marbling technique on the horn’s outside
to describe the natural folds of the horns shadow.

What are the difficulties from your working progress?
- Pottery is baked under 1250 degree’s kiln. Before the bake,
it’s extremely fragile. I need to constantly control and take
care of it. Therefore, in order to create a high quality work,
I throw my heart and soul to this long process. More than
anything else, I put a lot of effort on the animal
creation work at this stage.

Is there any other genre that you would like you challenge yourself
with for the innovation in “Horn”?

- From the start to the end of the project, I create everything
alone. Myself as a craft artist, I enjoy the long-term process
of it, which tides to my own belief. I know I can’t make my
work better than Mother Nature. However, by sculpturing
animals, I think I became very closer with the nature.

Artist inspired by horn’s ambiguity appearance, focused on
the shape of the horn and created various ceramic shapes.
Different images of animals are combined into ceramic
works, interesting patterns and texture creates a new
figure. Through the ambiguity of this horn with strong
characteristic but contains soft lines from outside
silhouettes, artist informs herself to stay
stronger but be beautiful at the same time.
