‘FACE.’ Gentle Monster and various artists work together
to create a new image which never existed before. S.C.P

Manual: Project mask
Genre: Ceramic art

Intro
A mask eventually breaks,
a moment when the hidden
identity unveils itself.

Tell us about yourself.
- My name is Takahito Irie, and I am a visual artist currently working
in South ea. I also work abroad in the UK, Germany, and China.

I hear that you are currently working two jobs. How is that coming along?
- I work as a art director at an advertising company and continue my work
as a multidisciplinary artist at the same time. I think that the two correlate
in a way that they both require maintaining creativity and progressively forming
self-identity. I constantly discover and learn from working with both, so it’s
actually not as overwhelming as it sounds.

What would you consider to be the most important?
- The most crucial thing is maintaining self-identity. Not only creativity is
important but also the efficient use of communication. I always try my best to
convey my thoughts through using languages such as Japanese, English, and ean.
The process is almost like handling different, multiple graphic tools – I enjoy it a lot.

What would be the main focus?
- I’m interested in the rapid advancement of technology and how people are
unknowingly becoming more and more addicted to having access to technology.
The ‘human machine’ series focuses on the implications of technology on men
and their consciousness, how men’s bodies and minds are being influenced.

Could you elaborate a bit more on your art?
- I paint on my models’ bodies and faces. The geometric designs
and colors that I use express the characteristics of a robot or a
cyborg, which then aims to illustrate the idea of men becoming
consumed by technology. Ultimately, my work intends to emphasize
the importance of a man’s ego and identity that lies beneath the
painting. Through my work, I construct my vision of utopia where the
changing relationship between men and machine will eventually blur
and begin to shape one another.

Is your current work/project also an extension of the human-machine series?
It seems as if the genre of your art has shifted from 2D painting to 3D sculpting.

- The process in completing this specific work/project was different,
but the intended direction of the overarching theme stays the same.
The ego beneath the painting and the ego beneath the mask represent
the same thing and convey the same message. To portray the mask’s
fragility, I decided that using ceramic material would be ideal.
I completed the robotic design with platinum.

Is there any other genre that you would like you challenge yourself
with for the innovation in “human machine”?

- Indeed, it’s abstractive painting and video. My aspiration is
to always challenge myself without being limited by certain styles
and customs. I want to be able to make use of the myriad mediums.

Takahito
Irie

Takahito Irie is interested in the identity and
ego of men. As an artist who paints on the body,
the most important thing is to understand the person’s
ego. In Takahito’s works, the models speak their own
stories that are concealed behind their painted
bodies and faces through their eyes.
