Skin Craft Project No.2

March 5, 2015

‘ The interpreted new approach of the previous form.’

S.C.P (SKIN CRAFT PROJECT): based on the motif called
‘FACE.’ Gentle Monster and various artists work together
to create a new image which never existed before. S.C.P
is has three parts: Project Eyeglasses, Wearable Mask,
and Art Face. It creates the new space that allows people
communicate new inspiration in the physical world and beyond.

I wanted to make sculptures with a story.
Specifically, I wanted the object to evoke images
of a story, and intrigue curiosity from viewers
about the process. Somewhere down a dark alley
is an antique shop. A wooden box is piled up
with dust. Upon opening the box, an armet made
of wood and leather with none traceable distinction
spots the eye. A few minutes passed by. Slowly after
a few coughs the armet begins to squirm.

Intro
It is no different that all forms derive from
simple everyday ideas. Still, the author develops
the story with peculiar concept in their crafting.
Hyper-real activities simultaneously take place
and recorded, and the collaboration with Gentle
Monster also becomes part of the record.

Please tell us about yourself.
- I manage a design company, and I am a narrative artist through such mediums
as sculpture and installation art.

I heard that before becoming the narrative artist, you had
particular work experiences?

- Before becoming an artist, I promised myself that I wouldn't be one and wanted
to work in a totally different field. Social science tutoring that I started as my
part-time job led me to run a social science study institute. After that, I did
interior design for a company and graphic design along side. In 2008, I managed
a t-shirt company that began from a character design.

When we look at you past works, it's difficult to put them into
one genre. If you could shortly describe your work, which genre would it be categorized under?

- I got this question numerous times when I first presented the space installation
that tells a story. I do not believe my works are within the boundary of say a B-movie,
any fiction, pantomime, or even installation art. I simply think the works are in their own genre.

It seems like you were inspired by diverse genres. Can you tell us
which particular aspects you were drowned and inspired?

- Mainly I enjoy observing collective behaviors; How large numbers of people engage as
one individual or under one idea. Actually, my former theories can be even hard to state
as even that, a theory. It is more close to a failed hypothesis, for they are the ones I
had strong belief for a brief moment which has slowly vanished away. 'Why people would be
drawn to such thing?' is the key point that constantly generates challenges.

You have such a unique character that makes hard to guess your taste.
Are there any other areas that you are interested in?

- When I was teaching social science, I mainly taught history as it was based on my
taste. I was interested in the circumstances of archeology, legends, and science that
were not taught as part of history.

It is like watching a mockumentary when we observe the art making
process under one narrative story. Would you briefly tell us your process?

- Amateur zoologist John Fancier incubated the eggs of an unusual animal, Bokaisen in a
lab at a forbidden island. After a year, strange incidents began to take place: Each
offspring showed contrasting genetic predispositions. As the cubs were being raised,
they grew up with different traits as the ‘parent’ (the scientists who were recognized
as their parents) had different method of raising them. John Fancier's team suggested
that this experiment contained a new genetic fact, thus calling for a special experiment.

I understand that this work is connected previous art as one continuous
story. Would you please give us the details?

- The story of this work is a sort of prequel and is about the Island oh which Bokaisen was
born. The artist Jaeyoung Park, who appears in the tale, investigates for years and years
about the Island. Meanwhile, the fictitious character Jaeyoung Park goes under an interrogation
by the agents from National Criminal Investigation because he slipped a national secret
(Island Project: Factory of Civilization, DSC, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, 2009.)
He found a hidden room in an attic in Itaewon, Seoul, where a native of the Island once stayed
(Island Project: The Room of a Restless Man, Maybe, Artspace, 2009).
