‘ The interpreted new approach of the previous form.’

S.C.P (SKIN CRAFT PROJECT): based on the motif called
‘FACE.’ Gentle Monster and various artists work together
to create a new image which never existed before. S.C.P
is has three parts: Project Eyeglasses, Wearable Mask,
and Art Face. It creates the new space that allows people
communicate new inspiration in the physical world and beyond.

Manual: Art Face
Junk Art

The literal meaning of ‘Plastik’
doesn’t refer to the material which we
commonly think of when we use the term.
In German ‘Plastik’ is sculpture, molding,
etc. Plastik Monster was created with a
technique called Assemblage, which combines
multiple media to create the feeling of gravity.
Plastik Monster includes three animal heads
made with different mediums. The artist used
roughly textured gold paint to communicate
a high standard or status. The gold mixes
with other colors in the sculpture, to
illustrate that people have different
identities but try to move forward under
one goal. This is the artists interpretation
of the meaning of Gentle Monster as well.

Please Introduce yourself.
I’m woojin Kim. I mainly use plastic chairs to make art pieces.

Please explain Junk Art and why you are attracted to it.
In my work, I use Assemblage technique to make the art and
the main material is what makes it Junk Art. The Junk Art
is using trash or anything left over from life.
Also, The reason that I use Assemblage is that it reflects
my feelings about my work: ‘ how many things I create
isn’t as important as what I achieve.’ With Assemblage,
I don’t know what the exact outcome will be that’s why I like it.

Assemblage has a lot of limitations. How do you get
around those limitations?

Well, limitation makes a space for accidents. We rarely
think about that and that’s very attractive to me.

Why did you use plastic chairs?
One day, I was thinking about objects that have been disconnected
from previous definitions, and the idea of a chair came to mind.
The chair was made in ancient Egypt. It was only for high class
people can use. But in modern society the plastic chair is mass
manufactured, which is a long way from where it came from.
It no longer carries the meaning of status and comfort.
I want to use that transformation of meaning as inspiration
for my work there are many stories surrounding this object.

You used the original color from the plastic
chair, why is that ?

Well, the color in the artwork is the message,
for people who want to pursue their own dream,
in my word. The red, blue, green are each symbolizing
passion, wisdom, vitality. These elements are
harmonized in the art work. I don’t use paint much
on the surface because if I did would change the
meaning. The change is what my works mean to me.
I am still figuring it out.

What is the significanc of the rough finish
on the surface?

The rough finishing is black unifies my work as
one entity. The medium is not simply mixed or
aggregated under a certain routine; chairs
are completed as one thing.

When the artist was young, he wanted
to be an a zookeeper. This inspired
him to use a plastic chair to create
various animals in order to present
multiple stories. He only uses second
hand materials, which is might be
why it’s called ‘Junk art’, but
at the same time he instils the meaning
of his dreams into the materials.
The plastic chairs lose their original
form in the creative process some are
broken and others melted in order to
create the forms of animals. Through
this process he shows that materials
can take on a new meaning through art.
